So our adventure began with Dunkin' Donuts followed by a leisurely drive to Portsmouth that may have involved a slight detour into Maine. Oops. Back on track, we wandered through the down for a bit, marveling at the quaint shops and purchasing a few impulse buys. I'm a bit of a sucker for the flavored balsamic vinegars from La Roux. Portsmouth is a great coastal town that's managed to keep its historic feel while adding great 21st century features like easy parking and a variety of stores and restaurants. I used to love stopping there when we went to visit family in Maine. My friend and I had lunch at Flatbread Company, one of our favorite restaurants. It's fun to compare the different locations because they use local ingredients so the menus are slightly different.
Then it was about a 40 minute drive to the lake, which involved a very long and rutted driveway to get to the cabin. But once there, the views were spectacular, the company delightful, and the food bountiful. Sometimes you don't have to go far or seeking a grand adventure to really appreciate the world around you. This weekend was a good reminder of that- there's plenty to marvel at even a day trip away.
